Scott, on his first "Rock Hopping" trip (as he called it), did an outstanding job of capturing the trail, the scenery, the rigs, and the people on the trip. Thanks Scott! |

Steve also did an outstanding job of capturing the entire experience (trail, scenery, rigs, and people) and took the only pictures of Bald Mountain |

| Most of us are home from Dinky Creek but Eric had trouble with his
tow vehicle when it blew a seal in his trans just as he got to Shaver Lake.
As far as we know he and Kevin are still camping in a remote site just
outside of Dinky. Poor baby had to extend his vacation.
We had a great time there we did Swamp, a portion of the Dusy, Bald Mountain and Coyote Lake. Not everyone did all the runs, but some did this run or that run. I did Swamp and Coyote but thought better of the Dusy and hitched a ride with Bob. Swamp was run 1 and it is a lot tougher than it was when I did it in my 4Runner. I beat the stuffing out of my truck to get it through, got a little right fender damage and also tore the left shock mount off, fortunately it was a clean break on the welds so I will have an easy fix. We took a day off after that and played in Dinky Creek and such. Tuesday we started our Dusy run and overnighter with more trouble than you could believe. Most other clubs would have packed it in and went home to lick their wounds, but this is the Spinnin' Fours. Both Bob and Steve had trouble with their trucks but instead of quitting we fixed the problems and pushed on to the campsite. Once there we were greeted by the locals who had missed any human contact to that point since the trail was just opened the day before..... mosquitoes, lots of them, and they brought all their friends to join the feast they thought they were to have, but we had news for them, lots of spray. Once the sun set and it got a little chilly out they left for the most part and we settled in and had a nice fire. Morning brought another round of mosquitoes and their newborn children but we fought them off with another dip in the sprays then headed back down since we only wanted one night on the trail. We made really good time until this one rock jumped up and hit Bob's rock slider and shut his Bronco off, he tried to crank it a couple times and the only sound was clicking from his starter. All of a sudden Steve reported over the radio that smoke was coming from under Bob's hood. Everyone showed up with a fire extinguisher just in case but fortunately the offending cable burned through and kept us from having to try to keep from having a forest fire. Steve rerouted a few wires and eliminated one of Bob's batteries and off we went again. It was high fives for everyone once back at the trail head for a job well done, even with the bad start and fire close episode. On our final trip we did Coyote Lake, what an exciting trail it was. Almost like the Dusy but without the long rocky loose climb. I picked up a rock inside my bead and decided to just tough it out until we got to the lake. Once there I removed my tire and proceeded to try and remove the rock, after several attempts to unseat the bead Lloyd broke out some liquid soap and that did the trick. I cleaned out any rocks and junk that could be there, then refilled the tire only to find that we didn't protect the inside bead and now it was full of junk and my tire leaked even worse. So we deflated it again and Eric scraped all the junk out. On a side note there was a Ranger that came and chatted with us for a while and I think he must be the coolest Ranger ever. He got the job because of his off road skill. Started on bikes as a kid built his first 4x4 at age 15 (a Toyota of course) and his off road knowledge was extensive. If all Ranger's were like him we'd be in pig heaven. Any ways once we finished and I put my tire back on we set out on our return trip, we tore that trail up. Spanked it like a bad step-child, it fought us but in the end we triumphed. Fred was going to meet up with us but found that his steering box was taking a hike off his Sammi so he chained it up and called it a day, and Bob figured he best stay back so the fire brigade could rest up. Some did Bald Mountain on odd/off days, I didn't since the creek with the slide and cliff dives were promised to Robbie. I had a great time and from what I understand we are already in the planning stages of a return to the area next year. We did find out some interesting things about getting a trail cleared, there were fallen trees everywhere, and in fact while hanging out on the trail we heard a tree fall in the forest and had one fall across the trail on our return from the Dusy that we had to drive around. |
